+ FRIENDS OF LEADINGAGE NE PAC DINNER

We will be offering a Pre-conference program focused on owners, C-suite, Executive Directors and Board Members, beginning at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, March 21, 2023. The event will be held at the Holiday Inn Kearney hotel. Participants will discuss implications of the past, where we are right now as a sector, and also take a look at the future of senior living. After the Pre-conference program there will be a Cocktail Hour for all attendees, brought to you by Silver Business Associate Northwest Respiratory. All participants of the Pre-conference program are invited to the Cocktail Hour. Information about the PAC Dinner is below and is separate from other Tuesday activities.

Ziegler: State of Long-term Care in America (where we've been) 

What Living as a Resident Can Teach Long-Term Care Staff by Leslie Pedtke: Wayne Dryer once said, “Change the way you look at things, and the things you look at change.” What happens when “real” caregivers become “real” residents? How will their experiences change how they think about being a dependent person living in long-term care? While those of us are committed to person-directed care, we may be missing an essential link: walking in the shoes of those living in our long-term care communities. “Through the Looking Glass” was an experience developed by Ms. Pedtke, to teach empathy to caregivers. Staff members moved into the nursing home, lived the role of a real diagnosis, and accepted daily ‘challenges’ that our residents experience every day. From learning the importance of communication to creating meaningful engagement, the resulting insights of these caregivers sensitized other staff members – new and veteran – to practical and effective ways that they were able to immediately improve care-partner relationships.

Future Statistics and Services of LTC by Dr. Julie Masters: A view of the future: Projecting future aging and how providers can think strategically about their role in delivering supportive services. Statistics on aging will be presented along with some of the key opportunities and challenges faced by older adults, their families, and the communities in which they live.

Speaker bios:

Ziegler Team: William Carney joined the senior living team at Ziegler in 1999 after 15 years of credit and banking experience with clients in the Midwestern and Western states. He has assisted providers with financing new construction, campus repositioning, and start-up projects. In helping his clients find the optimum financing structure, he has worked with unenhanced, fixed rate debt, credit enhanced variable rate bonds, extendable rate securities, HUD debt programs, and interest rate derivative products. He is a frequent speaker at state and national conferences on senior living topics. Will is based in the Chicago office and is responsible for clients in the Midwest region, including, the states of Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Iowa, and Nebraska. Prior to joining Ziegler, Will worked for an investment bank in Dallas, TX where he provided comprehensive financial advisory and underwriting services. In addition to Will’s banking experience, he worked at Standard & Poor’s Corp (S&P) as a rating officer in the Healthcare Group. Prior to that he worked for the U.S. Treasury in Washington D.C. as a press aide in the Department of Public Affairs. Will earned a B.A. from Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he won the Senior Thesis Prize from the Economics Department. He also received a M.Sc. in economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science (London, England).

Matt Mulé joined the senior living team at Ziegler in 2012. His primary responsibility is to provide banking support and financial analysis for senior living providers to deliver financings from conception to completion. Since joining Ziegler, Matt has worked to bring over $3 billion of capital to not-for-profit senior living providers, with structures that have included taxable and tax-exempt debt, rated and nonrated bonds, bank and public fixed rate debt, temporary and permanent debt, fixed and variable interest rate bonds, and lines
of credit. Notable financings include structuring the first Floating Rate Note for a not-for-profit senior living provider in the country in 2016 and the first Cinderella Bond involving public tax-exempt fixed rate bonds in 2018. Matt initially joined Ziegler in January 2012 as an intern where he provided analytical and transactional support to both the senior living investment banking and the corporate finance healthcare team. Matt earned his B.A. in both economics and political science from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY.

Leslie Pedtke, MHA, BA, is the owner and founder of Dignity Quotient, a healthcare consulting company focusing on creating cultures of dignity for the people being cared for, their families and employees. She has extensive experience in aging services and currently owns an Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Trenton, IL. As a former administrator, she also has extensive experience as a former owner of multiple skilled nursing and assisted living communities in Illinois. Leslie is a champion of Culture Change in aging services.

Julie L. Masters, PhD is a professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha.  She holds the distinguished Terry Haney Chair of Gerontology.  Julie teaches courses in gerontology and death and dying. She also works with students on independent research topics and honors theses.  In addition to teaching, Julie is involved in research related to end-of-life planning and COVID-19 and its effects on aging adults living in the community, senior living environments, and those serving as volunteers to others.  Julie is active in the community serving on various advisory committees and boards focused on aging adults and is a frequent presenter on aging issues and end-of-life planning throughout Nebraska.

The PAC Dinner from 6:30 - 8:00 pm on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 is a special event benefiting the Friends of LeadingAge Nebraska Political Action Committee. The PAC Dinner is paid for by Friends of LeadingAge Nebraska PAC, 625 S 14th St, Ste A, Lincoln NE 68508. PAC Dinner registration and payment is separate from the Pre-conference and Cocktail Hour.
